There are usually three types of automatic carton gluing machines:
Ordinary Edge Paste Gluer
This machine has the most basic functions, including folding on both sides and edge pasting. It has the highest market share and a wide range of applications, serving as the most basic gluing equipment, replacing manual gluing.
Pre-folded Box Gluer (Four Sides)
Unlike ordinary box gluers and manual box gluers that can only fold two sides, this type allows for the folding of all four sides. Pre-folded cartons are easy to open and suitable for automatic loading and packaging machines, especially for pharmaceutical boxes, which primarily use pre-folded box gluers.
Gluing Machine with Hook Bottom
This is the most complex equipment among all types of gluing machines and the most challenging to debug. It incorporates the functions of the previous two types while also folding and pasting the bottom of the box. Boxes glued this way are particularly easy to open, as the bottom is already glued, eliminating the need for manual insertion, which is referred to as an automatic bottom in the industry. Generally, high-grade boxes (such as cosmetics boxes) utilize the hook bottom structure. In foreign markets, over 50% of boxes use the hook bottom method, while domestically, hook bottom boxes account for less than 10%. This is mainly due to the smaller scale and higher price of domestic hook bottom gluing equipment, which often leads to the use of traditional manual insert bottoms.
Common Troubleshooting of Carton Box Gluing Machines and How to Identify Issues
Carton Feeding and Alignment Problems
Carton Jamming: Check that the cartons are correctly aligned and stacked in the feeder. Ensure that the conveyor belts are tensioned properly and moving smoothly.
Carton Deformation: Inspect the conveyor rollers and belts for damaged or worn components that may cause carton deformation. Adjust the alignment and tension settings to mitigate this issue.
Misaligned Cartons: Adjust the carton sensors and guides to ensure the cartons are positioned correctly for gluing. Check for any foreign obstructions or objects that may interfere with proper alignment.
Electrical and Mechanical Problems
Electrical Faults: Inspect the electrical connections, circuit breakers, and wiring for any damaged or loose components. Ensure that the machine is properly grounded to avoid electrical risks.
Sensor Malfunctions: Confirm that all sensors are correctly aligned, clean, and functioning properly. Check the wiring and connections for any shorts or interruptions.
Mechanical Failures: Listen for unusual vibrations or noises that may indicate mechanical problems. Examine bearings, gears, and other moving parts for damage or wear.
Drying and Setting Issues
Slow Drying Time: Check the air circulation and temperature within the drying tunnel. Ensure that the exhaust system is functioning correctly to remove excess moisture.
Delamination: Inspect the carton surface for proper glue application and sufficient drying time. Look for any moisture or contamination that may weaken the bond.
Poor Glue Setting: Confirm that the glue type is compatible with the carton material and working conditions. Adjust the curing temperature or time to optimize the bonding process.
Here are some steps to follow:
Encoding
Select the corresponding program for the product. Once the glue head follows the bonding line, the machine will automatically record this line, and a program will be generated automatically. It's very user-friendly; even individuals with no coding ability or basic computer skills will be able to operate it on their own in just one or two days.
Adjust the Glue Seam
You can use needles with different hole sizes or adjust the air pressure inside the cartridge. Glue joints should be minimized for better results.
Mass Production
In actual production, regular bonding can be initiated using the four buttons on the control panel: "Run," "Stop," "Reset," and "Scram."
The Components of a Cardboard Gluing Machine
Feed Section
This is composed of the paper feeding belt, main front gauge, auxiliary front gauge, side baffle, paper feeding speed control, belt roller, and paper stack back baffle.
Feed Belt
The tension of the paper feeding belt should be even and equal, and tight enough to prevent slipping on the drive shaft. Use as many belts as necessary according to the carton size.
Main Front Gauge
The main front gauge must be positioned on a specific paper feeding belt, determined according to the cardboard box size. The following principles should be observed: place the main front gauge between the first and third creases whenever possible; position it as close to the middle of the cardboard box as possible; and place it opposite the longest front panel and the widest panel. The height of the main front gauge should be adjusted based on the thickness of the paperboard to ensure free passage without gaps. An electronic double-sheet detection system is used to monitor for double sheets.
Auxiliary Front Gauge
The function of the auxiliary front gauge is to further support the paper stack at the front, preventing it from falling due to gaps between the side baffles. The height of the auxiliary front gauge is generally three times the thickness of the paperboard.
Side Baffle
When adjusting the side baffle, avoid crowding the paperboard between the two side baffles. A gap of 1-2mm should be maintained.
Feed Speed
The paper feeding speed of the gluing machine is adjusted by the CVT (continuously variable transmission). Do not use the CVT when the machine is stopped.
Belt Roller
The pressure roller of the conveyor belt ensures the paperboard aligns against the side baffle for correct positioning.
Stack Back Baffle
The function of the stack back baffle is to tilt the stack slightly to facilitate paper feeding.
1. The machinery must be kept clean and should be cleaned frequently.
2. Wipe the mechanical belt with clean water to keep it clean and prevent slipping, especially to avoid glue sticking to the belt. The glue wheel and glue box at the bottom of the hook must be cleaned at the end of each workday; otherwise, the glue in the glue box may freeze, affecting the gluing effect.
3. The glue box of the gluing part should be kept clean and scrubbed frequently.
4. It is strictly forbidden to adjust the speed when the governor is stopped; otherwise, severe belt wear may occur.
5. The inner row plate support, shaft, and rod should be cleaned regularly. It is best to use a mixture of lubricating oil and grease to prevent rust, applying it by shaking left and right.
6. It is advisable to drive slowly before turning on the machine to check for any abnormalities.

By Solvent Presence
The gluing machine can be divided into solvent gluing machines and solvent-free gluing machines. Solvent gluing machines have mature technology in terms of equipment and processes. Solvent-free gluing machines are less common but represent a viable technological option.
By Oven Placement Method
Gluing machines can be categorized as vertical gluing machines and horizontal gluing machines, each having different structures and functions for the oven. Vertical gluing machines are primarily used to produce adhesive sheets based on fiberglass cloth (PP), while horizontal gluing machines mainly produce paper-based adhesive sheets (PP).
By Heating and Drying Method
Gluing machines can be divided into hot air gluing machines and infrared radiation gluing machines. The horizontal gluing machine requires an "air cushion" to hold the PP, making it a hot air type. Vertical gluing machines primarily used hot air for heating until the mid-1980s; in the 1990s, they began adopting infrared radiation for heating.
